Ambassador Kenneth Merten visits USAID projects in La Vallée de Jacmel

Ambassador Kenneth Merten recently traveled to La Vallée de Jacmel in Haiti's southeast department to visit USAID's Office of Food for Peace (FFP) and Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) project sites with USAID partner ACDI/VOCA.  During the visit to the FFP project sites, he met with farmers to discuss how the $37 million, five-year agriculture and health project aids growers in La Vallée de Jacmel to improve their farming techniques.

USAID, the Government of Haiti Department-level counterparts, and ACDI/VOCA collaborate to provide food security assistance in the area through farming technique improvement, health care and nutrition, and support in the development of an Early Warning System.  Beneficiaries of the ACDI/VOCA HOPE program, a $3.9 million multi-sector project funded by OFDA, met with Ambassador Merten to share their experiences as participants in a local road rehabilitation project.  Nearly 6,000 individuals in La Vallée de Jacmel participated in the project from April 2010 to May 2011 in the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake.
