Ambassador's visit to Cité Soleil May 4, 2007

First official project under the Auspices of the Haiti Stabilization Initiative in Cité Soleil

Pictures of Ambassador's visit below.

This is the first official project under the auspices of the Haiti Stabilization Initiative, which was launched April 25  by the Prime Minister and the Ambassador.  The program itself was first announced in Washington in February by Under Secretary of State Burns and Foreign Minister Clerisme.

The project is a $20 million for this fiscal year, from the Government and people of the United States, through the U.S. Mission in Haiti

The project which the Ambassador initiated is Rue Dieuseul in Simon Pélé, which was repaved with the assistance of our partner IOM and the local community.

We are working closely with the Government of Haiti and many local community groups to identify, prioritize and « realiser » projects which meet the needs of the local residents, which include infrastructure, education, good governance and security.  These include rehabilitating the police commiseriats, the mairie, schools (including the Boston National School), roadwork, building a new marketplace, parks and public gathering places and implementing vocational education and after-school programs for the youth of Cité Soleil and Simon Pélé.

Over 1,000 meters of road have been repaved already in Cité Soleil and Simon Péle under the HSI.

The goal of HSI is to help the residents withdraw their neighborhoods from gang violence and poverty.  Through improvement to the daily living situation, such as roads, short and long-term employment, schools, etc., the hope is to return stability and prosperity to some of the most-affected neighborhoods in the capital.

The US delegation which the Ambassador led on Friday included :

    • the Deputy Director of the Office for Stabilization and Reconstruction at the State Department, Mark Asquino
    • the Deputy Director for Caribbean Affairs at the State Department, Timothy Ryan
    • the Chief of Mission for USAID in Haiti, Paul Tuebner
