As an agency within the Department of Health and & Human Services (HHS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people, both at home and abroad, providing credible medical surveillance information to enhance public health decision making, and improving public health through strong partnerships.
To mitigate the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS, CDC works collaboratively with other U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID); international health and economic organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNAIDS, the World Bank and the Global Fund; non-governmental organizations; and host country ministries and agencies.
In September 2002, the CDC Global AIDS Program opened an office in Haiti to complement and strengthen the HIV/AIDS control efforts of the US Government's response to the epidemic, working in partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Health (MOH).
