Emergency Appointment Requests

All applicants applying for a non-immigrant visa must pay the non-refundable application fee at Sogebank and schedule an appointment on the on-line system. Please refer to the complete directions on scheduling an appointment for a visa interview. If an earlier appointment than is available on the interview calendar is required because of emergent circumstances, such as those listed below, please write to PAPNIV@state.gov.

The embassy’s guidelines are very specific regarding what constitutes an emergency. Under the following circumstances, an applicant may request an expedited appointment:

1.   Immediate Family Member is Critically Ill - Applicants must present a letter on hospital letterhead (a faxed letter will be sufficient) signed by the attending physician explaining the nature of the immediate family member's illness and why the applicant must urgently travel to the U.S. An immediate family is defined as a mother, father, son, daughter or spouse.

2.   Urgent Medical Treatment - Applicants must present an original letter from a treating physician in Haiti explaining the nature of the illness and why urgent treatment in the U.S. is required. Applicants should also present a letter from the hospital in the U.S. explaining under what circumstances and at what cost the hospital will provide the required treatment and hospitalization. Applicants must present proof that they have the funds to pay for both their initial and any possible follow-up medical treatment in the U.S.

3.   Emergency Business Travel - Applicants must present a letter from their employer, on original letterhead, explaining the urgent, unexpected need to travel. The letter must state how long they have been employed, in what position, what their basic monthly salary is, and how long they will be away from work. It must include the nature of their business, including contact information of U.S. companies or offices they will visit. Regular, ongoing business-related travel for which the applicant did not plan sufficiently in advance for his visa appointment is not considered urgent.

4.   Students and Exchange Visitors - All applicants for F1, M1 and J1 visas will be expedited in order to accommodate program start dates.

Please include the following information:

  1. Applicant’s name
  2. Applicant’s date of birth
  3. Applicant’s phone number
  4. Applicant’s reason for requesting an emergency appointment
  5. Applicant’s scheduled appointment date

The non-immigrant visa unit chief will review all requests for expedited appointments and determine whether it is possible to grant an earlier interview.

Due to the large demand for visa interviews, we cannot accommodate all early appointment requests. Early appointments will be given to applicants where legitimate travel needs are warranted.

If a request for an early appointment does not meet the criteria, the appointment will not be granted.

Note: All applicants must be eligible for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa and should be prepared to establish sufficient ties to Haiti to overcome the required legal presumption that they are intending to immigrate to the U.S. For information on eligibility requirements, please visit the State Department Bureau of Consular Affairs website.
