New K9 Partners for Haitian National Police

PNH with K9s (DOS)

Haitian National Police with their new K-9 partners

The Haitian National Police (HNP) recently became the owner of six trained dogs specializing in the detection of narcotics, explosives and currency. The dogs, purchased and trained through United States government funding, were donated to the Haitian government through the Narcotics Affairs Section (NAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti as part of continued U.S. support of capacity building for the HNP.

Following their combined five-and-a-half month in-depth USG-funded canine training in the Dominican Republic and in Colombia, the six HNP/BLTS canine handlers and their dogs (Annie, Tony, Carla, Izzy, Toya and Loly) started their first operation at the International Airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Friday July 1, 2011. The new HNP Canine Unit is a component of “Bureau de Lutte Contre le Traffic de Stupefiants” (BLTS). One of the six canines will be used for specialized explosives detection and another to detect currency. Canine Operations are conducted in conjunction with DEA.
