Immigrant Visas

An Immigrant Visa allows you to travel to the United States and to become a Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) or U.S. citizen.  LPR status is also commonly known as having a “green card” and it is the first step on your way to becoming a citizen of the United States.

To apply for an Immigrant Visa, you usually need a petition. Information on how to file for a petition with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is available at the USCIS website: The most common immigrant visa categories are:

  • Immediate Relatives of American citizens or LPRs
  • Special Immigrants
  • Family-sponsored
  • Employer-sponsored
