Frequently Asked Questions
I have contacted the National Visa Center and was informed that my case is qualified. Can the consular section please schedule me for my interview?
When your priority date is current, you have submitted all the required forms and documents, and paid all the fees to the National Visa Center, NVC will schedule your immigrant visa interview and will transfer your file to the consular section.
Why was I refused for administrative processing?
On the day of the interview, you might not be found eligible for the visa. At that time, the consular officer might wish to run an administrative check of your documents or other aspects of your case in order to verify your eligibility for the visa. Administrative processing often lasts about 90 days, but in some instances, it can take several months or even longer. We realize that these extended time periods cause frustration to many individuals but the Embassy in Port au Prince, like all U.S. Embassies and Consulates, must adjudicate visas in accordance with the provisions of the law.
Why haven’t I received my fiancé(e) packet yet? The National Visa Center says that it was sent.
Upon receipt of your petition, the National Visa Center opens an electronic file for your fiancé(e) and transfers the petition to the consular section. Once the petition is received by the consular section, consular staff will send a fiancé(e) packet to all addresses on record. It will take four (4) to six (6) weeks to reach you. If it has been more than six (6) weeks and you still have not received your packet, please contact us by calling (509) 3859-9524, (509)3859-9534, or (509)3859-9564. If you are in the US, you may dial 1-877-917-2482. You may also write to papcons@state.gov. We may provide you with the electronic version of the packet. Your fiancé(e) may also wish to visit us to retrieve a duplicate packet.
The Consular Officer told me that my spouse/finacé(e) needs to come to Haiti for an interview but it is difficult for my spouse/fiancé(e) to travel right now. Is it possible to arrange a conference call or telephone interview?
We understand that it may be difficult to travel to Haiti. However, we do not arrange telephone or conference interviews. If you are unable to travel right away, you can select a date that would accommodate your schedule at your earliest convenience by contacting our Center for Public Information (CIVA) anytime at (509) 2229-5001/3859-9524/3859-9534/3859-9564 or writing us at papcons@state.gov. You have an allotted time period of one year to comply with this requirement.
I am a U.S. Citizen and I have applied for an immigrant visa on behalf of my mother. While filing the petition I have listed my little brother who is under my mother’s care. Can a visa be also granted to him in order to travel with my mother?
The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) does not allow derivative status to family members of immediate relatives. The IR5 (parent) classification is an immediate relative visa category; therefore you cannot add your brother as a derivative on the petition which you filed for your mother. You may file an I-130 petition for him under the F4 immigrant visa category. For more detailed information on the procedures and requirements for immigrant visas, you may refer to the Department State’s website http://travel.state.gov.
