New School in Leogane
On June 9, 2011, embassy officers traveled to Leogane to donate books to the Ecole Louis Borno. Leogane was the epicenter of the January 12, 2010, earthquake, and the original school was destroyed. In August 2010, however, the school was the first of many to be rebuilt under a public-private partnership between the U.S. government and the Digicel Foundation. The U.S. Agency for International Development provided the structures, which were painted and set up by graduates of IDEJEN, a vocational skills training program for unemployed youths who have basic, non-formal education. This effort gives these young men and women the chance to develop work skills and earn a living for their families. The embassy’s Public Diplomacy section donated textbooks and reference materials, which will be of great use to the students.
