Verdict in Les Cayes Prison Massacre Trial
January 20, 2012
We commend the verdict handed down yesterday in Les Cayes, which marks a significant step forward in the Haitian judicial system’s stance against impunity and demonstrates a renewed commitment for the respect of human rights, the rule of law, and accountability.
On January 19, 2010, in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake, security officials opened fire on prisoners attempting an escape from the Les Cayes prison, killing dozens of inmates. A joint Haitian and United Nations independent commission of inquiry determined that the officers behaved “deliberately and without justification.” Two years later, a judge found eight officers guilty, imposing sentences of two to 13 years in prison, with the most senior officials receiving the harshest sentences.
Reinforcing the rule of law and combating impunity are essential to a better future for Haiti and the United States will continue to support Haitian efforts in these critical areas.
