April 20: National Diaspora Day in Haiti
April 20 marks National Diaspora Day in Haiti. People of Haitian origin living abroad are collectively known as the diaspora. More than a million Haitians are living in the United States and making valuable contributions to politics, culture, economy, and society. The World Bank reports that the Haitian diaspora sends in excess of $1.4 billion annually to Haiti, making the diaspora the source of 20% of total annual GDP in Haiti. They also provide a link of shared culture and language between our two countries.
We salute the contributions of the Haitian diaspora both in Haiti and in the United States!
