Medical Treatment

Visitors who are seeking medical treatment in the United States may seek a B1/B2 tourist visa.  In addition to the documents listed on Required Documentation for Application and Other Documentation, applicants seeking visas for the purpose of obtaining medical treatment in the United States should present the following:

1. Medical Report

  • A complete medical report including a medical history.
  • Statements from the responsible doctor and medical facility in the United States. The letter must state (i) the nature of the illness and the reasons why treatment in the United States is being sought, (ii) the treatment proposed, (iii) the anticipated length of the treatment, and (iv) a written estimate of the projected cost of treatment.
  • A letter of admission to the hospital (if applicable).

2. Proof of funds

  • Evidence that the treatment will not require any expenditure of public funds.
  • If a relative of the applicant will meet the cost of treatment, evidence of that person's ability to pay must be submitted. Such evidence may include bank records, tax returns, and confirmation of employment.
  • If treatment is to be covered by health insurance, private insurance companies must explain in writing what specific coverage they will provide to the applicant.
  • Proof of medical insurance--Present a letter from your insurance company specifying that the amount of compensation provided for by the insurance policy will cover the cost of the treatment.  If however, you do not have medical insurance, you must open an escrow account to that effect, payable to the medical institution for the estimated cost of the treatment.

Failure to provide satisfactory financial documentation will delay processing the visa application.

Note: Individuals suffering from certain illnesses are ineligible, according to the United States Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), to receive visas. In such instances, a waiver of the ineligibility may be sought from the Nonimmigrant Visa Section at the Embassy.  All other conditions for issuance of a visa for medical treatment apply.
