Protest Demonstration Notice

May 10, 2005

A group has announced plans to demonstrate in Port au Prince on Wednesday, 11 May 2005. The march will begin on Avenue Christophe at approximately 9AM, proceed to John Brown and up to the Prime Minister’s office, then to Delmas near the Delmas 33 area.

There will likely be traffic flow disruptions, police activity, and impassable roadways in these areas. The RSO section is advising all official personnel to avoid the areas mentioned above for the duration of the marches. This could easily be the entire day of 11 May. Please plan your travel accordingly, and use southern routes into and out of the downtown areas.

Additionally, US Citizens are reminded that the following areas remain off-limits to US Embassy personnel - Bel Air, Cite Soleil, Cite Militaire, Carrefour, La Saline, Port Road and the American Road (AKA Route Nef).

U.S. citizens currently in Haiti should remain vigilant and review their security posture on a regular basis. Conditions remain unsettled throughout the country, making travel hazardous at times.

The Department of State continues to monitor security conditions and will promptly disseminate information affecting the safety of Americans abroad through its consular information program. These documents are available on the Department's Internet website.

In case of an emergency, please contact the Embassy at 222-0200 or the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy located at 104, rue Oswald Durand, Port-au-Prince. The telephone numbers are (509) 223-7011, 223-6440, 223-6443, 223-6421, 223-6426, 223-6424, 223-6407, 223-7008; fax (509) 223-9665; email address acspap@state.gov.
